A series of pieces done for sort of a story about the pagan Narentanians, medieval Slavic pirates from Adriatic and fierce enemies of Venice.
The vaults and pillars in the first piece were based on the actual dungeons from Diocletian's palace in Split, Croatia, while the markings on the warlord's arms and face are based on traditional Croatian tattoos, which to these days survive in some of the more benighted parts of Dalmatian hinterland.
No bears were harmed during the making of these pictures, except the one that got his head split, his limbs cut and his skin flayed for a cool-looking barbarian cloak :)
